Chickens in the Basement

I love to write and I love to laugh. When I write, I get to the point quick. My stories would fit on the back of a postcard. They usually make me chuckle. And you know what they say, "It's all about me!"

I Ain't Skeerd

I don't know if any of you guys have noticed from previous photographs, but I ain't scared of color! The bolder, the better. The brighter, the happier I am! I blame all of this on my friend, Donna. She has managed to get me into many of the things I'm now obsessed with. While my color choices may not be the colors she would choose, she did remind me that it's just paint. If you don't like it, paint over it. I have done just that on more than one occasion! To see some of Donna's many talents, visit her website to see what her shop, Sticks and More in Snow Hill, North Carolina looks like. She makes lots of the stuff she sells. Can you say TALENTED?! My favorite thing that Donna makes are her angels. Here's the one she made for me...

She sits on top of the cabinets in my kitchen! I'm sure she has kept the house from burning down on more than one occassion!

These are made from old tobacco sticks that came out of her Daddy's tobacco barns. Other things are made of tin and wood from the actual barn. Donna has made angels for me with particular phrases painted on them. My cousin has a beach cottage named Cheers Y'all. Donna made a cute angel with this painted on the wings. One of the renters liked it so much, they took it home with them. Donna's going to make another one for me when she has some free time. (Don't worry if you're reading, I'm not rushing you!)

So, with all of this said, I love color and it's all Donna's fault!

Last night, I laid out some of the quilt flowers I've been hand sewing (this project started over the summer when I got addicted to a stupid game on the computer and needed a distraction to refocus my addiction ). The pattern is called Grandma's Garden. Usually, this was done from old flour sack fabric. Some of the colors were bright while others were more pastel. Since I like my garden to slap you in the face with color, I decided to bring that theme inside and put it on a quilt. With about 60 of the flowers pieced together, I wanted to take a break from sewing individual flowers and start attaching them together.

The lay out

I decided to use a black background so the colors really pop!!! Here's the lay out and how the flowers will look on black...

On a black background

It's funny! While I revel in color, I have friends who keep their walls white, their wood stained...never painted, their bedspreads neutral. Where do you fall in the scheme of things? Do you stay plain or do you threaten folks with bright-color-induced seizures?

Well, the only room I really feel comfortable with bright color is the kitchen. It's bright red, turquoise and yellow. Just the stuff... not the walls. I haven't convinced MDH that bright yellow would look good on the walls. He's pretty somber. All our walls are white except the pink guestroom. I think I was conditioned to believe that white walls make a better background for your stuff, but I would so like to paint at least ONE room a bright color!

The quilt is really lovely. What a lot of work. I can see why you had to take a break. You are also very talented. As for color on my walls...oh yes, love, love, love color. Artwork pops on walls of color. The first few brush strokes are skeery though, aren't they?

the quilt colors are beautiful. I like color. but my husband wants the neutrals, so I add pops of color in furniture and accessories.

I think I fall somewhere in between. The wildest color we've ever done is currently in my work room... Its a lovely shade of violet and I absolutely LOVE it! I also like to wear lots of color (as long as I'm not in one of my brown snd beige phases). But my all time favorite hue is not very colorful- I love the color of old book pages! I think the patina and old wash are so beautiful.

By the way, great quilt! The black background is a good choice. I can't wait to see it finished! I didn't know you sewed! I still haven't taken my sewing machine out of the box. But it is definitely something I want to learn (that along with knitting)... Resolutions for the New Year!

Im a black and white type of gal! My wedding colors were even black and white. I love the two stark colors together! Buuuut...I also have a thing for lime green as you could tell for my love of green glass and my office, kitchen and bathroom have a lime green theme! So I have a very neutral side and then I have my lime green side! So who knows where I fall!
